Moving TipsUnpacking Moving Boxes Without Chaos If you thought packing and moving was the hard part, you missed an important step in the process: getting things out of your moving boxes and into their right place at your new home can be just as overwhelming. Having a plan in mind, however, can really help you smooth out the process. Unpack the basics first. If you rarely cook or eat at home, it makes little sense to start with the kitchen. Instead, get all the toiletries out and make sure you have enough towels and pillows to spend the first night comfortably. Assembling furniture can wait. Either put the mattress on the floor or use the pull-out sofa. Tables, bookcases and other furniture can be set up throughout the week, rather than on the first day. If you have small kids, make sure there’s a safe area for them to play while the boxes are still around. Either create a corner in the living room, complete with TV and a box of toys, or set up their bedroom first. Unpack room by room, rather than just taking out random items from the boxes. This will give you a sense of accomplishment, especially as you see the rooms starting to take shape. To help speed up the process, move boxes to the room where they’re supposed to be as soon as you get into the house. This is much better and easier than piling everything into the living room and then having to carry things to every other room. Above all, remember that you don’t need to unpack everything on the first day. In fact, it makes more sense to give yourself a few days (or even a week) to figure out if you want to rearrange the furniture or replace something in the room before you put the accessories out.
