The Do’s and Don’ts of Packing Successfully
When it comes to packing and moving, here are some do’s and don’ts to help you make the most of your time and effort.
- Do have a plan. Rather than just going with the flow and waiting till the last minute to get your boxes ready, jot down steps to help you streamline the process. Make sure you include everything, from buying the packing supplies to getting rid of things you don’t want to take along, to the actual packing. Break it down into days or weeks to make it easier.
- Do make sure you have enough supplies. If you have so much to pack that you can’t guess how many moving boxes you will need, try piling it up in groups to get a better idea. When the time comes to buy boxes, always get 2-3 more than you think you will need. The same is true of tape, bubble wrap and other supplies.
- Do enlist the help of friends or family. Let kids get involved by giving them boxes and encouraging them to pack their own things. Older family members can help take apart furniture or box books.
- Do have a Plan B. Make sure you have emergency contact numbers, addresses for local hotels and a map of your new neighbourhood. Make sure you’re not moving at 10pm of your last paid rent day. If the truck is late or something happens, you may be in trouble with the landlord.
- Don’t try to save money on packing supplies. If you have breakable items, make sure you pack them appropriately using bubble wrap and thick cardboard boxes. The last thing you want is to spend a lot of money on a moving truck, only to find out nothing arrived in good condition because of the packing.
- Don’t leave everything till the last minute. Make sure you reconfirm everything at least a few days in advance. If you want to hire additional help or need to get more supplies, do it as soon as possible.
- Don’t take everything with you. Chances are you can discard, donate or give away at least 25 percent of your possessions without feeling the loss at all. Throwing things away can even help you save money, as it may be cheaper to replace furniture than to take the old one along.
