Moving TipsHow to Reuse Packing BoxesThe move is over and you’re left with dozens of empty moving boxes spread around the house. While your first instinct may be to throw everything out as quickly as possible, don’t do it just yet. Empty boxes can be given a second life as storage devices and organization tools. Do you have a basement? If so, empty packing boxes can be used to store items out of sight. In fact, shipping boxes are great for this purpose because they are sturdy and resistant to damage. Use small and medium moving boxes to pack out-of-season items, including clothing, footwear or sport equipment. Choose a standard size box, such as all the small ones you have, and cover it with plastic contact paper. Then store things inside and piled them up neatly in a corner, with the heaviest ones in the bottom. This is a great solution if you don’t have enough space to hide things away and need to create additional storage. Use small boxes as “drawers” inside cabinets, especially kitchen cupboards or garage shelves. Simply cut the top part to make the box completely open on one side and then place them next to each other on shelves or behind cabinet doors. Take the boxes apart to make use of the cardboard. Because of its durability, it can be easily used for almost anything, from sewing patters to temporary furniture (turn them upside down to make a table or a nightstand) to impromptu cake plates. If you still have too many boxes and no space for them, consider making them part of your next donation. Go through your house and find items you no longer want or need. Clothes, toys and electronics take a lot of space and rarely fit into garbage bags, so arrange them neatly into a large box and then drop everything off at the nearest Salvation Army.
