After moving into your new home, windows may be one of your biggest concerns especially regarding energy efficiency.

Focusing On Windows

It’s wise to upgrade your windows. Can you believe that the average U.S. house loses 25% of its heating and cooling through the windows?

If every house in the U.S. had energy efficient windows, we’d save up to 2.5% of the electricity we use.

To put it another way, we could save 200 gallons of oil for each American household. That means lower gas prices too and a better economy, more jobs, less pollution, etc.

Needless to say, whatever the expense to improve your window efficiency, you will be paid back in spades with lower heating bills.
Here are some ideas to stay on top of the situation and do your part in keeping the country up and running.

 • Caulk and strip your windows and frames. In the winter don’t let the hot air out and the cold air in and in summer vice versa. It’s really common sense, but so many of us forget to do it.

 • Use your curtains and shades. In the winter it is best to cover your windows at night, when there is no sun to help warm the house and in the summer, unless you are really in the mood to have the sun come in, covering the windows will help reduce your AC bills.
If you buy insulated drapes the energy you save will be even greater.

 • Here’s the big one you are probably gun-shy to do. Replace your old windows with new energy-efficient ones. The old-fashioned single pane windows provide an inadequate barrier against the outside air, accounting for considerably heat loss or gain.
Invest in double or triple pane glass, or so-called “low-e” glass, which allows full sunlight access but lessens the amount of heat transmitted between the inside and outside.

Also look into heat-absorbing glass, a newer technology that reduces the amount of heat that passes through the glass.

Ask your local professional for advice about energy efficient windows or do some research on the internet.

 • If you don’t want to get new windows just yet, there are stretch-seal and heat-shrink sheets made of plastic that can provide additional protection for your window.

• During the cooler months take your AC unit out of the window and put it in storage. If you can’t do this then cover the AC with a hefty coat of fiberglass insulation and then wrap plastic sheeting and duct tape around it, to keep out the chill and moisture.

• You can fix an air leak from a crack where the glass and a wooden window-frame meet by sealing it with a glazing compound. For an aluminum window-frame, that crack may require new weather stripping. Both glaze and stripping can probably be found at your local hardware store.

• If your window has cracks, don’t bother sealing them, just buy a new window altogether. top of page
