Below
are helpful energy saving tips when you are moving into
a new home or for your exiciting house.
You just finished moving into a new home and its summer time.
Keeping It Cool
You know how prohibitive the costs of air conditioning can be, if you overuse it and it’s a very hot summer. None of us like to get an electric bill for $500.
So as summer begins it’s slow approach, we should keep home energy conservation in mind. Bottom line, treat your air conditioners the same way you treat other energy-demanding appliances in your home. Be prudent in their use and keep them in good shape, so they remain smooth, cool and efficient.
• Make sure you own an energy-efficient air conditioner. If you don’t have one, you should buy one because you will get your money’s worth back within two summers. Aim for the model with maximum energy efficiency. It really will save, save, save you lots of money and of course help the environment last.
Your new air conditioner will be labeled with an (EER) which stands for Energy Efficiency Rating. This standard lets you calculate the amount of electricity the air conditioner will use. If you have a high EER, it will cost you less to achieve the same degree of cooling. A lower EER, means a higher cost.
Choose the higher EER!
• Don’t Be Too Cool
If you overcool, it is going to cost you bigtime in the wallet and what’s more, it will get you in a bad habit. Who wants to sit around all day in the ice cold? It is like another addiction. Forget it, be smart. Don't use or buy more cooling equipment capacity than you actually need.
If you choose to put central air conditioning in your home, ask the salesman for the most energy efficient unit for the space you have. In this case, bigger is not better. A unit that is too big will end up costing more to run and will probably leave a lot of humidity in the air. People don’t realize the dehumidifying effects of the air conditioner is just as relaxing as its cooling effects.
• Keep up with your system’s maintenance
A well tuned machine will work better, run smoother and more efficiently and thereby making you more wealthy and feeling cooler and better on those hot summer days where you can barely stand to wait in line at the ice cream truck.
Don’t be afraid to have it professionally maintained. Sure, try doing it yourself, but it is more important that it works right than you be the one who does it.
Ask the professional if he or she has any advice on how you can increase the model’s efficiency.
• Put a central ventilating fan in the house.
This can be put in your attic or in upstairs window. It will cool the whole house and cut back drastically on your need for AC, whatever your setup is for that.
Consumer Reports says that a central fan working in the proper conditions can cool and ventilate a whole house for the same energy costs it takes an AC unit to cool one room.
These fans are not like your usual room fans. They are big and powerful. You’d be wise to get one.
• Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible.
Experts recommend that 78 degrees F. is a reasonably comfortable and energy-efficient indoor temperature for those hot august nights. This should be fine, especially if you have a central fan to keep the air moving.
