Here are some more tips on keeping healthy and earth friendly in your new home after moving in.
Paint it Right
You’ve put away the moving supplies and packed up your moving boxes. But before you put everything away and clean up your new house you want to paint it, inside and out!
When painting your new home, don’t just think about style and color; think about your health. Paint fumes from unfriendly chemicals are a major health concern, causing problems such as eye, lung and skin irritation, headaches, nausea, respiratory distress, muscle weakness and possibly elevating your risk for cancer.
• Choose latex over oil paints. Latex is water based and contains fewer chemicals than oil-based paints. You will be happy to hear that latex is every bit as effective as oil paint indoors and out, while using less harmful chemicals and also the paint thinners and cleaners for latex are much less toxic.
• You want paint with a low volatile organic compound (VOC) level. VOC is a producer of ground-level ozone, which creates smog and poor breathing conditions, and many paints are carriers of this. There are so-called “odor free” paints on the market, which carry no VOCs. Generally speaking a paint that has a flat finish will have less VOCs than glossy paint.
• Leftover paint should be minimized. Measure the wall space you will be painting so you can buy the right amount of paint.
• If you have leftover paint, don’t just dump it in the trash or wash it down the drain. Either give it to someone who needs it or take it to the hazardous waste center. You can talk to your neighbors about a community household hazardous waste cleanup system whereby neighbors rotate taking each other’s hazardous waste to the dump.
• Make primer from leftover paint. Mix the leftover paints together and save for future use. Don’t mix oil and latex based paints. Many communities have paint swap programs, look into it. top
