Here is a checklist of various ideas of how to save energy in the house your moving into.
The Energy Saving Checklist
Lower those bills by following these tips:
$ Lower the water heater’s setting to 120 degrees. Two benefits here: Lower bills and you won’t get burned in the shower or while washing your hands.
$ Buy some insulation for the water heater; it will pay you back in less than 12 months.
$ Put your appliances on the appropriate settings, many of them have an energy-saving setting; if so, use that. Don’t be afraid to hand or air-dry your dishes instead of using the dry cycle on the dishwasher. Let your laundry hang in the fresh air instead of burn up and waste energy in the dryer.
$ All praise the almighty fluorescent lightbulbs! They reduce the amount of electric you use by about three quarters. Any light you use often is a prime target for an upgrade to fluorescent.
$ Computers can waste a lot of energy. Set your computer to go to screensaver mode after 3 minutes of non-use and energy-saving mode after 10-15 minutes. This can save you a lot of cash and also keep your computer monitor running longer.
$ If you are in the habit of falling asleep with the TV on, set it to sleep mode; all new models have it. This way after you pass out, the TV will turn itself off.
$ Filters on your AC, furnace and heat-pumps need to be checked out. It’s just like changing the oil filter on your car, clean filters are necessary to keep your home systems running smooth and efficiently.
$ Caulk and/or insulate your windows. This is how a lot of air gets out of the house, raising your heat or A/C bills.
$ Plug all the major air leaks you can find. Worse than the windows on your bills are the gaps around pipes and ceiling lightsOther prime candidates are your chimneys and spaces in the rear of cupboards and cabinets.
$Purchase a programmable thermostat that will change its settings mechanically at night and when you leave the house.
Don’t be crazy, keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature. top of
