After you’ve finished packing away all your stuff and folded up  your cardboard moving boxes it will be time to enjoy your new house. But it isn’t all fun, there are also bills to pay. We know you are environmentally responsible to begin with, but these water saving tips could cut your water bill in half or more.

Tap into Water Saving

Don’t waste water, it’s the stuff that life is made of

There wouldn’t be life without water. When you look at the ocean it seems infinite, but the reality is our domestic watersheds are under constant stress. We need to be conscious of this and do our part. Through conservation we can keep the flow of fresh, clean water alive for generations to come; bringing us health and well being, and saving money too.

Check out these water-saving tips for your home:

Throughout the House

• Setup a toilet dam or fill a plastic bottle with water and float it in your toilet tank. This will reduce the water used for each flush. Make sure they do not interfere with the other parts.
• Cover your pools and Jacuzzis when not in use, so you do not lose water due to evaporation.
• Put insulation over hot water pipes, this way water will heat up faster on its way to the faucet.
• Do not waste running water to thaw froozen foods.
• Put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator. It’s a more efficient way to keep water cold than running the tap for 30 seconds.
• Over-watering kills more plants than under-watering. Only water them when necessary.
• Test for a leaky toilet by putting food coloring in the toilet tank.  If you see any seepage, you have a leak. Fixing a leak can help you save over 600 gallons of water in just one month.
• Shop for energy efficient appliances. If you are getting a new washing machine or dishwasher, be sure it offers a range of settings. If you have a small load, you can choose small, saving lots of water and energy.

Cleaning Up

• Reduce the water usage in your shower by installing a low-flow shower head.  They are inexpensive and simple to install, and can help you preserve hundreds of gallons a week.
• Take shorter showers. Don’t waste time while you are in there. In this case, time isn’t money, time is water, an even more precious commodity.
• You could save 1,000 gallons a month by proper usage of your washing machine and dishwasher. Do not put half loads in, unless you have a dial switch that can regulate the size of the load.
• Soak the grime off of pots and pans rather than putting them under running water. This not only saves water, but is easier on you.
• Did you know if you turn off the water while you brush your teeth you can preserve 4 gallons of water a minute - that's 10,000 gallons in just one year for a family consisting of four.
• Do the same while you are shaving and save several thousand more gallons.
• Cleaning your sidewalk with a hose is a tremendous waste of H2O. Use a broom instead and you could save up to 80 gallons of water every time.
• Only use commercial car washes that recycles their water.
