OK, new home, new appliances, right? Here are some ideas to save you time and money and help preserve our environment.
Cutting Your Utility Costs Starts With Energy Efficient Appliances
Energy prices continue to rise. What are you to do? Well you are moving, so definitely look into your electric company options, before choosing a final location.
No matter where you move you will want to buy new energy efficient household appliances. They save time and money.
Models that carry the federal government’s Energy StarÆ label are the best.
Big savings-
• No appliances uses more energy than refrigerators, but the new models are much more efficient than older ones. If you replace a 19-cubic-foot model from 1995 with a new high-efficiency model, you can expect to save about $100 in energy costs in a year.
• Washing machines have two basic configuration styles. A top-loading, vertical-axis machine and a tumble-action, horizontal-axis machine. The better choice is the tumble-action machine, they use 30%-40% less energy and 50% less water per load.
• About 5% of the electricity consumed in your new household will come from drying your clothes. They are mammoth heat machines. An energy efficient dryer saves you money and prevents your clothes from over-drying, a major fabric-ruiner. A dryer that runs on natural gas is a lot cheaper than one that runs on electric. Of course the best idea is to hang as many clothes as possible.
• Getting a high-efficiency water heater will save you between $30 and $220 a year depending on what kind of energy source your new home use.
• The new generation of air conditioners are at least twice as efficient as their ancestors of 15 years ago. Replace your old model with a new one and save hundreds of dollars. Pack your old one in a moving box and donate it to a scrap shop.
• Jimmy Carter once said instead of turning up the heat put on a sweater. See if you can keep that thermostat low.
