Make Yours a Green Laundry Room
It’s laundry time! It may not be your favorite chore, but you don’t want to make it worse by adding pollution and allergens to the situation. Here are some ideas for keeping this famous household chore kind on your body and the environment.
Some things to consider are the energy used to wash, dry and iron clothes and the cleaning detergents that freshen up your wardrobe.
Here are some ideas:
• Use warm and cool water, rather than hot. If you use hot water for both washing and rinsing this will use more than triple the energy than a warm wash followed by a cold rinse. All that energy, but chances are you wouldn’t notice a difference in how clean your clothes are.
• Use gentle, natural detergents. Your body may be allergic to the chemical in ordinary detergents and they get into our water systems and cause problems. Stick to the natural, fruit and vegetable based cleaning products.
• As always, get, be and stay EFFICIENT!
Did you know the new model, high-efficiency washing machines use 4 times less energy than the old dinosaurs. That’s an immense improvement that could easily save you $100 in a year.
• Keep the temperature on your water heater around 120 degrees; this will be fine for your household’s need and help cut bills and preserve energy.
• Load ‘er up!
It is easier and more efficient to one jumbo wash load than two small one. Needless to say, don’t overload, then nothing will get clean.
• Let the air flow.
The outside vent on your dryer can get clogged up, check them and make sure the air is flowing nicely. See that it shuts properly and is unsoiled or the outside air may find a draft pass into the house.
• Hang em’
Consider removing clothes out of the dryer while still slightly wet and hanging on a line. This will reduce your need to iron your clothes and also reduce the amount of energy used in operating your dryer.
Better yet, don’t use your dryer at all, just hang em’ on a clothes line. top
