More ideas for keeping your new home environmentally friendly and clean.
Every Day is Earth Day
Every day can and should be Earth Day!
Look around your house and do an inventory in your head every day of how you can be gentle and kind to your home, community and the planet. You are a part of the planet after all; if you are not kind to the planet you are not kind to yourself. If you are not kind to yourself, you will not be happy!
Every day is Earth Day; remember that.
After you have unpacked your moving boxes, put away all the moving supplies and have even enjoyed a housewarming party, it will really be time to take care of your new home, which is an extension of you, who is an extension of the planet and so on.
Take care of it all, here are some more ideas.
So much paper is wasted. In countries that do not have the resources and wealth, or that are simply more environmentally conscious, this is not tolerated. Paper is a precious resource. It comes from trees.
Reduce your paper use by reusing paper before throwing it out. Use rags instead of paper towels, cloth napkins instead of paper ones.
When you buy paper, use post-consumer recycled paper as much as possible and of course, recycle paper you are throwing out.
There are vegetable based paints, stains and varnishes on the market. Use them when touching up your new house. You don’t want those chemicals getting in your lungs, eyes and blood or polluting the Earth. Don’t wash toxins down the drain, if you have leftover paint give it to a friend of charity or if you need to dispose of it, go to your local toxic waste disposal center. It is disgusting to throw toxic waste in municipal landfills, think about it.
Before you replace, repair. You can reupholster furniture instead of tossing it to the curb. Maybe those shoes can be resoled, if you really like them.
One of the best things you can do for your bills and the environment is replace disposable goods with renewable ones. Use rechargeable batteries. Use dishes instead of paper plates, glass and cups instead of disposable plastic or paper ones.
It really is a shame we rely so much on disposable items. Wouldn’t it be appropriate if we all had our own polyester shopping bags we could bring along with us when we went shopping?
Natural fiber sponges can help keep things nice and easy in your new home. A friend of mine, swears by fiber sponges. He recently moved into a new house and bought a three year supply of them in celebration.
He reminds people, to make every day Earth Day, you’ve got to turn off the lights when you leave the room, recycle and keep the thermostat on a reasonable temperature.
Biodegradable cleaning agents are another key. Products that are non-toxic, phosphate-free, chlorine free and use natural fragrances will keep your home and planet happy.
Plant a planet-friendly garden. Use only organic fertilizers and pesticides. Buy organic food. Create a more pest-resilient garden by rotating fruits and vegetables. You can also work on attracting friendly bugs to be predators on less friendly pests.
Use organic landscaping. Chemical fertilizers on people’s lawns run off with the rain and kill our rivers and drinking water. Also your pets and children play in these lawns.
It isn’t worth it to have a greener lawn if its going to spread cancer and disease and kill wildlife.
And let us remind you to read our tips on home heating and appliance efficiency. It is essential that we save our money and resources as best we can. We don’t want to waste our opportunity while we have it.
So with all these tips and inspiration, are you ready to make every day at your new home Earth Day? If you are, it will spread to your new neighbors and on and on.
Have a nice day. page top
