Helpful Moving Tips:
Moving For Less
Moving doesn’t have to cost a fortune. While there are some things that are worth the extra cost (a good rental van, additional insurance, quality packing supplies), there are other aspects that can be cut or modified in order to save you the most money.
Do the packing yourself. As long as it doesn’t affect your moving insurance (this depends on your moving company, so you should check in advance), you can save the most by packing everything yourself and then paying the movers only to carry and deliver. If you don’t have a lot of things to move or if you can enlist the help of friends and family, this could be a great option.
Hire a moving truck rather than a moving company. With a moving truck, you’re on your own. You simply pay the company for the right to use the vehicle, plus an extra for miles driven, but you have to drive the truck yourself, as well as load it and unload it. A moving company, on the other hand, will charge you much more but will take care of the whole process.
Buy your packing and shipping supplies in sets. This is usually cheaper than buying boxes, tape and other items separately. If you’re able to calculate how much stuff you have, you could also buy sets that designed for specific household sizes (3 bedrooms, 6 bedrooms, etc.).
Get rid of things. The less you take along, the less you will have to spend on packing supplies, transportation and storage. Donating things can also save you money in the long run, as you will probably get a tax deduction. |
