Helpful Moving Tips:
Helping Your Kids Move
Moving can be especially difficult for kids, as they’re not only leaving behind the place they know, but also friends and maybe even possessions. You can help kids get through the process by following a series of steps and making sure they’re fully involved in the process.
Let the kids pack their own things. Give them a few cardboard boxes and let them decide what goes where and how to pack things away. Older children can probably pack their whole rooms, while younger ones may need supervision. Kids under 7 may not grab the concept of packing well, so give them just one medium cardboard box and let them pack their toys or other large items.
If you’re holding a garage sale, ask your child to choose things he would like to get rid of. Children may be resistant to the idea of letting go of possessions, but you can make it easier by telling them they can keep the money for everything they sell. This will reduce the total amount of items you need to pack and also give your child a central role in the whole process.
Try to keep their routine as normal as possible. Don’t pull them out of daycare or cancel all their activities until the last minute. Allow them to have playdates, even if you’re busy packing and organizing. This will give children a sense of security and make it easier for them to adapt to the idea of moving.
Once at your new location, let older kids decide the arrangement of the bedroom, including paint and decoration if possible. Resist the temptation of taking over everything. It will not only make it easier on the kids to be involved, but also on you. |
