Moving Your Office
If you have just a basic home office, all you will need to move things are a few additional cardboard boxes and maybe some filing ones. If you work from home, however, or if have your own business, you will need to take special care of your paperwork to make sure it survives the move in perfect condition.
Get special crates or extra thick boxes to pack electronic equipment such as your computer, fax machine and printer. If you’re using regular cardboard boxes, make sure you wrap the equipment with a blanket or bubble wrap before you pack it away.
Find out in advance if your moving company has specific requirements regarding moving filing cabinets, desks, etc. Some companies will require that you empty everything and pack paperwork separately, while others will let you keep everything inside as long as you can lock drawers and doors.
Get things in order before you pack. If you haven’t organized your papers in years, this is not the time to start, but it will certainly help to at least have a general system, so you can find papers quickly once you start to unpack.
Put essential papers (birth certificate, deeds, contracts, etc.) in a special folder and don’t pack it along with your other things. If you can’t take these with you, do so. Otherwise, put them in a special crate and clearly mark them as important.
Some companies require special insurance if you’re moving valuables such as boxes of business papers. Read the fine print to make sure you’re protected. |
