Helpful Moving Tips:
Hiring the Right Mover
If you want a company to take over the whole packing and moving, you will need to do your research well in advance of the moving day. You will need to sign contracts, insure your valuables and make an appointment for your moving day, so the earlier you start, the better, but you should at least give yourself three weeks before the move to find the right company.
When interviewing moving companies, here are some questions to ask:
Who is the person you are speaking to? Is it just a desk employee or an estimator with experience in moving and estimates?
Will you be provided with a general estimate or will you get a number that can move only within a specific range? If the second option, will you be provided with an upper limit? You don’t want any surprises after the boxes have been delivered.
What does the price include and what it does not?
What does the insurance provided cover? Do you need to pay an additional premium to insure certain items, like a piano or a small collection of valuables? Who provides the insurance? Is it the company directly or do they use a third-party provider?
Can you stop by the company and take a look at their trucks and vans? Can they tell you what type and model of vehicle will they be using to move your things? If you’re hiring a large national company, you can probably check them out by going online and doing a search for their name. If you’re hiring a small local company, ask for references from satisfied costumers.
Trust your instincts. Are you treated with courtesy when you’re asking questions on the phone? If not, this may be an indication of what you can expect from the company and the employees. If you don’t feel comfortable from the beginning, move on to somebody else. |
