Helpful Moving Tips:
How to Deal with Moving Stress

Stress is considered one of the 10 top most stressful events in the life of a person, right along with divorce or a family death. It’s not wonder that the day can feel like the end of the world by the time the boxes are finally packed on the truck, ready to go. While you can’t completely avoid moving-day stress, there are things you can do to make the time manageable enough for everybody involved.

Plan everything in advance. Don’t let last-minute details put added stress on the day. If you have a list to follow, it’s less likely you will forget an important step or miss something.

Have a “Plan B” in mind. Know what you will do if major things go wrong, such as the truck arriving a day late to the destination or needing an extra cardboard box to pack things you find lying around at the last minute.

Get out of the house for a few minutes if you can. Even during actual moving day, take a break before the movers arrive and go out to breathe. Have coffee or lunch someplace quiet, or simply take a walk around the neighborhood. Getting away from the chaos of boxes and bags will help you relax.

Don’t leave the packing till the last minute. Keep essentials like toothbrush or shampoo out of the boxes, but pack the rest of the bathroom. You may think now that you will have time to do it on the last day, but you won’t, and the added stress will just make the whole day more difficult.

Once you get to your new home, unpack in order. Open first the boxes that you need for everyday living, such as your bed linens and the bathroom toiletries. The kitchen and the living room can wait. If you have children, unpack the TV so they have something to do while you’re moving boxes around.
