Helpful Moving Tips:
Protecting Yourself From Fraud
Hiring a moving company should be a smooth step in the moving process, but it can turn into a nightmare if you don’t plan well and end up working with an unscrupulous company that damages or loses your possessions. To protect yourself and the things you love, here are some things to keep in mind before signing a contract:
Get everything in writing: the total price, the warranty, the time and place of delivery. Make sure that prices are stated as “final” rather thane estimates. This will prevent the company from coming up with additional fees later on.
Make sure you’re protected in case of accidents or loss. This should be included in the price of the move, rather than being an additional service offered for a fee. Check also that the warranty is all-inclusive, rather than partial, where certain objects or certain incidents are not covered. Read the fine print too –Some companies will not offer insurance if you pack your own items.
Check the reputation of a company before you hire them. Hire based on a personal recommendation or ask to talk to past clients to see if they were satisfied and to what level. If you don’t know the company first-hand, contact the Better Business Bureau or The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to see if there are complaints filed against it.
Ask to be present when your boxes are weighed. This will prevent inflated numbers from making their way into your invoice. If you’re quoted a by-the-hour price, get a clear estimate in writing of the approximate number of hours it will take to reach the destination and look for a clause that shows the maximum you can be charged, so there’s no way the movers can purposely delay the delivery. |
