Helpful Moving Tips:
What You Shouldn’t Pack

In the frenzied times of packing and organizing, it’s easy to get carried away and put absolutely everything you own into boxes. The problem with this is that there are lots of items that you are likely to need either the same day or as soon as you step into your new home and having to search for them among dozens of boxes is not exactly fun. To prevent this, here are some things you should NOT pack away:

Basic personal hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, deodorant. If you’re planning on stay around and working some more after finishing with the packing, you will also need to keep around shampoo, soap and a towel.

Perishable foods. You may think you’ll have enough time to unpack and get the things to the fridge on time, but chances are you’ll be tired and overwhelmed by the time you get to the new apartment. Frozen foods, produce and open packages are especially likely to cause problems.

Basic pet supplies. This includes food and water bowls, a couple of toys, leash and food. If your pet needs a carrier to be moved to the next location, make sure you keep it handy too.

Medication. This includes prescription drugs you must take on a daily basis, plus some more basic things, such as pain relievers and band-aids.

Anything that can spill, explode or cause fires. These includes matches, car batteries, propane tanks, cleaning fluids and aerosol cans. Even perfumes can cause big harm if they open or break.

Anything too valuable to risk damage. While moving companies do their best to protect your valuables, things can happen: boxes may shift or stay too long in the heat, for example, ruinins items of sentimental value that cannot be replaced. If you have family photographs, specialty collections (i.e. stamps), jewelry or unique paperwork (house deed, birth certificate), you should consider bringing these with you, rather than packing them away.
