How to Protect Your Boxes

Think you only need to protect your valuables but not the container they travel in? Think again. Taking good care of your boxes will ensure that they withstand the stress of the move.

Keep them away from water. While this may be an obvious suggestion, many people don’t realize that water comes in lots of different forms. While you’re unlikely to leave your boxes outside in the rain, you also need to make sure nothing will drip on them, including condensation from air conditioners and humidifiers.

Make sure you keep the contents well organized. Loose items can shift and cause bumps and breaks in the boxes, making them more likely to break. This is especially important if you’re packing items with sharp edges or jagged sides.

Don’t make the boxes too heavy or they can break. Even the sturdiest of boxes have a limit as to how much they can carry before the bottom will give out. Make sure you mix heavy with light items to protect the boxes (and your back!).

If you bought the boxes well advance of the move, make sure you store them in a dry location, away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat can cause the cardboard to bend out of shape, making it difficult to put the boxes together when the time comes to do so.

Use only permanent markers to write on the outside. Other types of markers or pens may contain too much water or alcohol and can weaken the cardboard.

Don’t store liquids inside the boxes. Even perfectly closed bottles can puncture or break, causing the cardboard to become wet and lose strength.
