Choosing the Right Moving Insurance

Most moving companies will offer you a standard insurance along with your contract. This insurance usually covers loss of personal property caused by a major damage or incident, such as a crash, a fire or something else that goes beyond personal responsibility. While insurance policies vary among moving companies, the standard total coverage is about $25,000.

What you may not know, however, is that not everything you’re packing can be insured and even those things that are may not be paid for under certain circumstances. For example, some moving companies will only offer you insurance if things have been packed and uploaded to the truck by their own employees. In these cases, whatever you pack yourself won’t be covered. Other companies will let you pack on your own but have very strict guidelines of how things should be wrapped and organized. If you fail to follow those guidelines, your insurance may be void.

Things that have a sentimental value, paperwork and certain items like DVDs or books have no commercial value under the insurance coverage, so most companies won’t reimburse you for them, even if it’s their fault that they break. If you have things you can’t imagine parting with, consider moving them yourself rather than packing them away in boxes to go with the truck.

Finally, do keep in mind that anything with a particularly high value (such as a piano or a collectible) should be insured separately. Items that are especially valuable may require special packing and handling or may have to be moved by a different company. When in doubt, always consult with the moving company regarding their policy, put everything in writing and save all the receipts.
