 Ask Businesses for Boxes

Each day businesses receive deliveries of products in cardboard boxes.  Not to many of these businesses save the cardboard boxes.  That is good news for you!

Businesses to ask for Free Moving Boxes

  • Small retail stores:  Mom and pop shops will usually be more willing to give you their empty cardboard boxes.  Try shops that sell clothing, shoes/sneakers, hand bags, picture frames, video games, home accessories and grocery stores.
Disadvantage:  These small retailers tend to reuse much of their boxes for storing goods and deliveries and therefore the boxes they give you may likely be beat up and flimsy.

  • Large retail stores:   Large department stores some times may but most of the times will not hand over empty cardboard boxes due to policies.  They do how ever leave many empty cardboard boxes packaged neatly right next to their shops dumpster.  I do not recommend using cardboard boxes that are left by dumpsters no matter how new they look because there tends to be vermin/insects near dumpsters that may have infected the boxes and by using them you are risking infecting your new home.

  • Warehouse stores:  Places like Costco (food warehouse) will have empty cardboard boxes for you to take.  The empty cardboard boxes are intended for you to place your purchased products into because Costco does not give you plastic bags.  They have so many empty cardboard boxes that I am sure even if you do not make a purchase, they will gladly let you take some.
Disadvantage:  The only disadvantages to this suggestion are that their cardboard boxes never come with tops, are odd sizes, and tend to be flimsy. Also, the boxes are not folded flat making it difficult to carry them and leaving little space for them in a vehicle.

  • Supermarkets:  Places like Path Mark or an A & P supermarket will sometimes give you their empty cardboard boxes depending on which employee you ask (I recommend a manager).
Disadvantage:  Just make sure to ask them for cardboard boxes that did not have produce in them because many of the produce boxes tend to have a waxy residue on them that can rub off on your packed items and ruin your belongings.  Also produce boxes tend to have many holes in them, the purpose being allowing the produce proper ventilation, however this makes these types of cardboard boxes less useful for packing purposes.

  • Moving companies:  Usually a moving company will try and sell you moving boxes when you call them for a moving job.  Make sure and specify that you are interested in any “used moving boxes” that they might be throwing out.  Why do they throw out moving boxes?  After they finish helping a customer unpack, some people just give the mover back all the moving boxes.  The moving company should technically (recycle) throw the boxes out but most will re-use them. Disadvantage:  When choosing a moving company, make sure that they are giving you new packing boxes especially since they tend to have you pay such a high price for them!!     back to top
