Hi-yo, Silver, Away!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Silver can be packed into moving boxes and is easy enough to do. There is one thing that should be considered with silver and that is that it tarnishes when exposed to air or moisture. Though this is no more than an annoyance and can easily be remedied by polishing, it can be avoided simply by first wrapping individual pieces of silver in packing paper. Stretch wrap can also be used as an alternative. Additionally, Hollowware (an item that is plated more thickly in silver layers) should be packaged as a fragile item.

Another thing to think about is that there is some chance that silver items can be scratched during the move. A way to lessen this possibility is by purchasing smaller packing boxes so there is less chance that the weight of the items will cause damage. When packing silver, place items inside moving boxes so they fit quite snug to make certain there are no dings or dents.

Finally, keep in mind that silver is valuable. Make certain you have your items insured. The policy should cover loss or theft during transport. If the items make up the family silver, consider taking the box with you personally as you travel.

Reaching for the Heights of Your Ceiling

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Painting is a simple way to improve the value of a home. But reaching up to paint a ceiling can be a bit awkward. Here are some suggestions to make the job a little easier:

  1. First, clear the room of everything and stow items in a few packing boxes to keep track of them.
  2. Next, protect the floor with a canvas drop cloth and set it in place using blue tape, a quick release painter’s tape, which is less adhesive than normal tape and will not damage your floor.
  3. Purchase a roller with suitable texture; for drywall use short nap, for uneven surfaces use a heavy nap. Also, pick up a roller extension so you can easily reach the ceiling.
  4. Use a primer with some type of stain blocker before painting and less coats of paint will be needed.
  5. When ready to begin painting, start with a ladder and brush to work on cut-in lines. Cut-in lines are the outermost portions of the job and include the corners and perimeters. While the cut-in lines are still wet begin painting the ceiling using the roller with the extension attached. If you don’t do this you usually end up with visible lines. This is easiest if working with someone else. One person cuts the area while the other rolls. Avoid cutting the entire perimeter at once as the paint will dry to fast. Instead, do this as you go.

packing boxes with pets around

packing boxes with pets around

Here at DirectMovingBoxes.com we are pet lovers. So if you are packing or unpacking your moving boxes, its always a good idea to be careful were you are putting moving supplies with you pets around. Moving supplies such as small packing peanuts, rolls of packing tape and bubble wrap may seem like fun to play with for a dog or cat but can be very dangerous to the pets if accidentally eaten and swallowed.

Here is 2 good ideas you can do when unpacking or packing boxes:

1) Designated Moving Boxes. Have 1 or 2 designated moving boxes were you can put all your moving supplies. If your packing boxes, this is helpful because you will be more organized and always know where you moving supplies such as packing tape, markers and bubble wrap are. If your unpacking, it will help make clean up a snap because you will not have pieces of moving supplies such as plastic stretch wrap, paper, packing tape or styrofoam lying around the floor of your home, instead they will be contained into 1-2 cardboard boxes
2) keep pets separate. During unpacking or when packing boxes simply put your pet in the next room if possible. If thats not an option, you can also leave your pet with a friend or neighbor.

Things not to do with your pets:

1) Don’t let your pet run around your moving supplies and chew on rolls of packing tape, play in piles of bubble wrap and packing peanuts.
2) Don’t put your pet inside of a cardboard boxes if they do not have a safe way of getting out.

Remember pets are like kids and you have to keep an eye on them during your move. Being more organized with your moving boxes and moving supplies will not only help you in packing faster it will keep your pets safe to.

Used moving Boxes may Have Bedbugs living in them

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

used cardboard boxes

Be very careful if buying USED cardboard moving boxes!

There is nothing like the smell and feel of a getting new cardboard moving boxes for packing your belongings. Its kind of like opening up a new pack of socks, they have that new fresh clean feeling to them. When you buy new cardboard packing boxes and new moving supplies you actually know that you are the first person to be using them. The issue with used cardboard boxes is, you don’t know who’s stuff or what kind of stuff was packed into them. This leads to the whole issue of those gross pesky bedbugs.

Bedbugs have been a major issue in hotel and motels for along time. The thing is when most people visit hotels they tend to bring these little blood suckers home with them. It is a fact, that bedbugs are great hitchhikers and usually get into suit cases and other packages that are around. The even worse news is, they can stay alive without food for about one year. So when you get that great deal on Expedia for that motel, make sure to check there reviews for cleanness of the rooms.

The really bad news is, that once bedbugs get into your home they are very difficult to get rid of. These tiny little pests have even build resistance to many pesticides that are available today.  If you really want to get used cardboard boxes it is wise to actually know the person you are getting them from.

DIY garment bag for packing your clothes

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

When you are packing up your closet for moving, we strongly suggest using wardrobe moving boxes to help you keep all your clothing very safe and make for fast and easy packing.  If you don’t have any wardrobe moving boxes, then another method you can use to protect your clothing is a garment bag. Most people have at least 1 garment bag, which they usually got for free with a purchase of a suit or dress but if you don’t have one don’t worry, we’ll show you how to make one in a jiffy.

Simply take one large garbage bag and make a 4 inch hole at the bottom of the bag. Next, take a group of clothing on the hangers and put them into the garbage bag through the large opening till the hanger tops are sticking out of the small  ripped hole. Once that done, take a rubber band and tie it around the hanger tops to keep them together. After that, you can fold the bag with your clothing in half and place into a boxor luggage.

This do it yourself garment bag will keep your clothing from getting wrinkled and offers good protection from dust and stains.

Organizing for the Time-Crunched

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

No time to organize the whole house? Here are some tips to keep things in place in just 15 minutes:

  • In the kitchen, have a bag holder handy so you can put all the extra shopping bags in as you unload the groceries.
  • Throw away any storing containers you can’t find the lids for. You’ll never use them and they will just be around taking counter or cabinet space.
  • Resist the temptation of piling up magazines on top of the coffee table.
  • Take 15 minutes each week to throw away expired foods from your pantry and leftover that have been in the refrigerator for more than seven days.
  • Create a play zone, so toys don’t get dumped all over the house. Place a large chest or 1 or 2 empty cardboard boxes at a corner so all toys can be thrown in at the end of the day.
  • Stick to one or two collections, so you can not only contain the clutter but also have a chance to expand them to the max.
