Weight loss from Packing your Moving Boxes

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Who knew losing weight could happen from simply packing your personal stuff into
moving boxes, but its true. Packing boxes is definitely a work out and the more things you have to pack the more of a work out it will be.

Some Examples of the exercises packing boxes provides you with are:

- When carrying your items from closets to your moving boxes, you will be doing lots of bending, squatting and walking which will be great for legs as well as a cardio workout.

- Using moving supplies such as bubble wrap and stretch wrap and wrapping each of your times one by one is a great arm work out.

-   Lifting your moving boxes and stacking them into the moving truck will be great upper body and arm workout plus cardio.

Just keep in mind that stretching is a good idea before or after packing boxes to ensure you don’t get injured as well as to reduce soreness the next day. So skip the gym during packing time and start to pack those moving boxes and burn away calories today.

Following the Packing Commandments

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Moving and packing boxes are meant to be used in a certain way. Though this may seem painfully obvious, it can make for a much easier moving experience and turn a potentially stressful moving process into something a little easier to bare.

To begin with, pay attention to how much is being placed in each of your moving boxes. Most people would just stuff everything they can into one large box and be done with it. Not unlike over stuffing a suitcase, this can lead to tearing and spillage or damage to items inside. Additionally, over packing a box also means the box will be too heavy to handle and this could mean straining your back. Aim for moving boxes weighing no more than 20 to 30 pounds.

Underpacking a box is also not a good idea. When packing boxes are not filled to proper capacity, they are easily crushed and this can also mean damage to contents.

Another thing to consider is the age of your moving boxes. Old cardboard boxes are likely to tear more easily, especially bottom flaps. The solution? Purchase new moving supplies and avoid the potential hassle of picking up your belongings from off of the street.

Used moving Boxes may Have Bedbugs living in them

used cardboard boxes

Be very careful if buying USED cardboard moving boxes!

There is nothing like the smell and feel of a getting new cardboard moving boxes for packing your belongings. Its kind of like opening up a new pack of socks, they have that new fresh clean feeling to them. When you buy new cardboard packing boxes and new moving supplies you actually know that you are the first person to be using them. The issue with used cardboard boxes is, you don’t know who’s stuff or what kind of stuff was packed into them. This leads to the whole issue of those gross pesky bedbugs.

Bedbugs have been a major issue in hotel and motels for along time. The thing is when most people visit hotels they tend to bring these little blood suckers home with them. It is a fact, that bedbugs are great hitchhikers and usually get into suit cases and other packages that are around. The even worse news is, they can stay alive without food for about one year. So when you get that great deal on Expedia for that motel, make sure to check there reviews for cleanness of the rooms.

The really bad news is, that once bedbugs get into your home they are very difficult to get rid of. These tiny little pests have even build resistance to many pesticides that are available today.  If you really want to get used cardboard boxes it is wise to actually know the person you are getting them from.

Wardrobe moving boxes fit more stuff then just hanger clothing!

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Yes its moving time and everybody wants to get packed as fast as possible and try to keep things neat so unpacking will be easy. So when it comes time for packing your closet, most people turn to the best choice in doing this chore, wardrobe moving boxes.

Most people don’t realize that when you hang your clothing on the metal bar (which is included in our wardrobe box) in the wardrobe moving boxes there will be additional space at the bottom of the box. Please keep in mind that if you have long dresses they will probably touch the bottom of the box but if you have dress shirts or slacks the wardrobe moving boxes will give you clear and clean space at the bottom for additional belongings.

So what stuff should you pack at the bottom of your wardrobe boxes? Well items such as shoes, sneakers, socks, belts and even hats fit perfectly at the bottom of this large box.  When packing boxes being a little creative can help you utilize the space in your box to fit a lot more then you think.

Always remember to keep the weight of each moving box manageable to lift.

Designating Moving Boxes

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Moving is stressful. Anything you can do to make it a little bit easier will help you in the long run. With some extra planning, you will not have to worry about kicking that cardboard box in frustration and can instead focus on taking a well earned break over pizza and cold beer before getting back to the job.

One way to do this is by clearly designating your moving boxes room by room. Head to the stationary store and pick up a pack of markers of different colors. The colors themselves don’t matter, but having a different color for each room of the house does.

Start with the bathroom. Grab a marker. Let’s say the red one. Mark the box with a big red dot. All moving boxes with a red dot from here on out will be for the bathroom. The master bedroom bathroom with another color dot. Then, if you like, you can further break down the contents by writing with a regular pen. For instance, “Sink” or “Shower” or “Toilet paper.”

Using the dot system when packing will make your life easier in that you will not have to bend over and read your scribbling as you go. You can just look at the color, deliver it to the appropriate room and unpack it later.

Also, if others are helping, you can post a legend and tape it on the front door. As your helpers carry in a box they can just reference the legend and take the box to the appropriate room.

Organizing for the Time-Crunched

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

No time to organize the whole house? Here are some tips to keep things in place in just 15 minutes:

  • In the kitchen, have a bag holder handy so you can put all the extra shopping bags in as you unload the groceries.
  • Throw away any storing containers you can’t find the lids for. You’ll never use them and they will just be around taking counter or cabinet space.
  • Resist the temptation of piling up magazines on top of the coffee table.
  • Take 15 minutes each week to throw away expired foods from your pantry and leftover that have been in the refrigerator for more than seven days.
  • Create a play zone, so toys don’t get dumped all over the house. Place a large chest or 1 or 2 empty cardboard boxes at a corner so all toys can be thrown in at the end of the day.
  • Stick to one or two collections, so you can not only contain the clutter but also have a chance to expand them to the max.

Eat Pizza When Moving and Packing Boxes

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Yes Moving and packing boxes takes a lot of energy and time. The one thing everybody looks over is food. You are going to get hungry during your move at some point and you want something that tastes good and is not to messy to eat. The best moving and packing time food has to be pizza. Pizza is cheap, delivered to you quick, easy and fast to eat and usually always tastes yummy. Not to mention it has a good combination of both protein, carbohydrates and fats to keep you full of energy during your move.  Also the best part of ordering pizza during your move is that its a snap to clean up, just toss the empty box into the trash and your done.

Just remember, if you are moving you will probably not want to take food that needs refrigeration with you. So since you cant pack refrigerated food into moving boxes, simply eat it the last few days before your move or use it to make some sandwiches for the drive to your new location.

Moving and the Internet

Find Moving Supplies Online

Find Moving Supplies and Services Online

The Internet has made moving a lot easier and less stressful than it used to be. It has also made it cheaper, as long as you take the time to research your options. The first step in the process should be searching for moving companies. Rather than calling local ones or looking through the yellow pages, use the Internet to compare different ones or to ask for quotes. Don’t limit yourself to your town only –Look for options in surrounding areas as well.

Next, investigate the school district. If you have several options for schools, going online will allow you to compare official grading for any particular one, plus allow you to look at their curriculum, see how they rate against others and whether or not they are having certain problems, such as violence or low standardized test results.

The same is true of your neighborhood in general. Long before you move, you can use the Internet to locate basic services you are going to need, such as the post office, your bank’s branch, take out restaurants and even parks with dog runs.

Finally, look for forums where locals interact. If you have a pressing question or want an insider’s view of the area, nothing beats first-hand information from somebody who has lived there a lot longer than you.

Don’t forget that you can also buy your moving boxes and packing supplies online!

Dorm Room Decorating on the Cheap

Moving into a Dorm

Moving into a Dorm

Before you start decorating your dorm room, talk to your roommate. You will need to establish boundaries and understand what you can and cannot do. Once that’s clear, here are a few things you can do without spending much:

Hang a laundry line over your bed and use it to clip photos, drawings or magazine clippings. Not only will it double as a “flying picture frame” but it will also brighten the room without much of an expense. The plus? Once you’re tired of the pictures, you can simply replace them for new ones.

Buy a magnetic board (they’re available for under $10 at office supply stores) and use it as an impromptu datebook, picture frame or poetic inspiration (magnetic poetry is still around and can be not only fun but also educational!). If you can’t find a magnetic board, try a cork one, where you can attach things using simple metal tacks.

Use a string of mini-lights to create a softer atmosphere in the room. Hang them over the bedpost, around your desk or over the window, depending on what effect you’re going for. Stick to white lights to avoid a Christmasy feel.

Nothing says “college” like posters on the wall. Find out if your school has policies regarding posting things (should you use tape or tacks?) and then get to work decorating the stale walls.

Adopt a pet plant. If you’re never around, a cactus may be your best option: easy to take care and fun to look at.
