Yes if moving to a smaller home its best to try to get rid of as much stuff you dont need to save space and so you will have to buy less moving boxes.

I think filling empty spaces in the moving boxes with crumbled packing paper or newspaper is best to prevent the a cardboard box from smooshing inwards.
