Fixing Window Problems on Your Own

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

While major home problems will require the help of a professional, there are many around-the-house problems that can be fixed by anybody with just a few tools and a few spare minutes. Problems in windows are a clear example: they happen often but rarely require the help of an outsider.

Cracks in the glass can be temporarily fixed with masking tape place on both the inside and the outside of the house. Always make sure the crack is completely covered so it can’t chip and extend. Larger cracks that can be dangerous if left alone can be fixed by removing the entire pane of glass and placing a piece of clear hard plastic in the its place. A heavy-duty garbage bag also works in a cinch. Tiny holes and cracks can be fixed with clear nail polish. If they’re not big enough to compromise the whole glass, you may not even need to replace the pane at all.

Windows that can’t open can be caused by a series of reasons. If you recently painted the frame, the paint may have stuck on the side railings, causing the window to seal in place. To fix this, simply run a thin blade or piece of metal where the panel and the frame meet to remove any dry paint or debris. If the reason the window is not opening is humidity, try using a hair dryer to warm up the wood, then lubricate the channel so the window can slide back and forth without effort.

Green Up Your Home

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

While making a completely green house would probably require a major remodeling project and thousands of dollars, there are tons of small things you can do to better your home and protect the environment in the process.

Insulating the basement, attic and crawl spaces will ensure that you spend less money on electricity and gas to maintain optimal indoor temperatures. This also means less emissions going into the environment.

Installing lots of windows. One structural change that won’t cost you much but will save electricity is to have more windows put in, so you can take advantage of the light and the warmth of the sun coming in. Make sure you choose windows coated to protect against temperature changes.

Leave surfaces unfinished whenever possible. This will reduce the amount of formaldehyde and other chemicals in the area.

When possible, install containers outdoor to capture rain water. You can do this using a 50-gallon barrel, a cistern or even a fountain. You can use the water to water plants or to clean outdoor spaces. It will save on your water bill and conserve energy.

What Happens When You Can’t Sell the House

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Real estate is going through a tough time and selling a home may not be as easy as it was once was. If you can’t seem to find a buyer and you can’t afford to keep waiting, there are things you can do to reduce losses. One example is to rent the house on a short-term basis. If the furniture is still inside and the house is ready to be used, you could rent it week by week to business travelers or people vacationing in your city. With the prices of hotels as high as ever and people struggling financially, home renting is a popular alternative, as it allows families to shop at local markets (rather than spend lots of money at local restaurants) and to save money on multiple hotel rooms.

If selling is urgent, you can always lower the price. Look to what other houses in the area are selling for and try to match their prices. Or offer things others don’t, like leaving furnishings or major appliances behind as part of the deal.

Common Spending Mistakes: Blowing Your Remodeling Budget

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

  • Not planning well enough. If you don’t have a budget and a clear idea of what you want to do and how much you’re willing to spend on it, chances are you’ll spend too much.
  • Buying all new furniture. Whether you’re tired of the look in a room or the dogs have destroyed the couch, there are few times when you actually need to change every single of furniture in a room. In most cases, you can reupholster some pieces, paint others and add fabrics and linens to brighten up the place. Then buy one or two pieces that will really spruce up the place.
  • Changing the floors before exploring options. If you’re hardwood floors are scratched or chipped, you may think it’s time for new flooring. Before you go that route, find out if the damage can be repaired. Paint, wax or even sectional rugs can all cover the damage or at least hide it significantly.
  • Hiring a handyman for little repairs. Of course you need a contractor for major structural changes and a handyman to correct electrical or pipe problems. However, there’s no reason why you can’t learn to fix the smaller things yourself. Fixing a small hole on a wall, especially in a place like the garage or the basement, where perfection is not needed, can be done by everybody. The same is true of painting a room, replacing a switchplate or other small house repairs.

Transforming a Bedroom Into Something Else

Friday, August 28th, 2009

If you have a spare bedroom in your home, chances are is turning (or already has) into a catch-all room, where all the extras goes and no real order can ever be made of anything. If that’s the case, don’t despair. You can rescue the bedroom and convert it into an useful, organized room.

The simplest idea is to turn the room into a guest bedroom. This requires no additional purchases (providing you already had a bed and wardrobe or chest drawer in there). Clean up the items you don’t need, pack up clothing or seasonal decorations and you’re ready to have company over.

The second most useful idea may be to turn the room into a home office. Even if you don’t work from home, you can still use an office to help you organize paperwork and bills, to spend some time reading alone or to store the computer and other office equipment. An office needs a desk, a comfortable chair and a shelving unit or drawers to organize office supplies and other extras.

If you have kids, making the room into a playroom will allow the kids to play at their hearts’ content without you having to worry about seeing toys strung over the whole house. If company shows up, you can simply close the door and not worry about the mess. Also, having a specific room designated as a playroom will make it easier to child-proof and make sure it’s safe and free of sharp corners or dangers when the kids are jumping around.

If you need a storage room and there’s nowhere else your stuff can be relegated to, you can use the bedroom as storage, as long as you find a way to do it cleverly. Buy cardboard boxes or plastic containers where you can divide and store things according to season or use. Cupboards and drawer systems will take care of paperwork and other flat items, while you can use hanging bags to store out-of-season clothing or sport equipment. If you organize it well enough, there’s no reason why the room couldn’t serve as both storage and bedroom or office.

3 Kitchen Updates that Won’t Break the Bank

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Whether you’re getting ready to move and want to increase your home’s value or just moved into a new house and are desperate to remodel, you may be weary of tackling any changes in the kitchen. Traditionally, kitchens are more expensive to remodel than any other room because changes usually require structural reconstruction, including moving gas or water pipes, electric cords or built-in furniture (such as cabinets).

However, there are some simple changes that can be made in the kitchen that will significantly increase its value, as well as changing the look and making you feel like you just invested thousands.

Give Cabinets a Facelift. Paint them if they’re wood, or replace the doors for new ones in a different style. Glass ones are great if you’re the organized type and want a modern look. Otherwise, go for something with texture, such as shutter-like doors or something with molding. You can also replace the cabinet hardware and choose knobs that are brushed metal or

Get Rid of Fluorescent Lights. They make the room look dated and yellowish. Install track lighting if you can afford to pay a professional, or buy a couple of floor lamps and place in opposite corners. If you have a large table, create a centerpiece by grouping several candles and placing them on a tray in the center of the table.

Replace the Floor. You don’t need to spend a fortune or even hire a professional to change your floors. Instead, buy self-adhesive vinyl flooring at the local home improvement store and simply place it on top of your current floor. While each product comes with its own instructions, it’s usually just a quick process of no more than a couple of steps.

Aluminum is King

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Most people paint their houses. And after a few years, they paint their house again, and again, and again. There are, however, better ways to spend one’s time than by climbing up a ladder with a brush every spring.

Aluminum siding offers a welcome change from this chore. Aluminum is an excellent, durable alternative as it is both corrosion-resistant and holds up well in all types of weather. Additionally, aluminum considerably alters energy savings in the home by acting as an additional insulator for temperatures inside the home. If well maintained, homeowners can expect aluminum to last anywhere from 30 years to the life of their home.

As far as siding materials go, aluminum is quite cost effective and remains an industry standard to this day. For those wishing to further lower there remodeling costs, aluminum siding is manageable enough that it can be installed as a do-it-yourself project with a bit of planning. As far as maintenance goes, aluminum siding only need be washed with a little soap and water about once a year to clean off the grime.

Aluminum siding can be purchased in two general forms. The first is plain siding that may or may not be primed, allowing homeowners to paint the siding as they wish. The second is pre-painted in a variety of different paints and textures and homeowners choose from a catalogue of some sort.

Making It Rough for the Bad Guys

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

FBI crime statistics claim that a robbery occurs every 14 seconds. Even more bad news: 60% of robberies occur while there is someone at home and 38% involve a firearm of one kind or another. What does this mean for a homeowner? This means that investing in a security system of some kind is a wise idea.

To protect possessions and property to the best of your ability, purchasing a home security system is your best bet. Home security systems are manufactured with a number of scenarios in mind. Some are made merely as an alarm for intrusion through doors an windows. Other, more advanced models, include box alarms for burglary, carbon monoxide, fire and medical emergencies.

Network alarm systems are connected via a network and monitored round the clock. Local police are generally notified once such a device is installed and when an alarm is tripped, law enforcement officers are notified. Monitoring occurs via a fee, paid either monthly or yearly and is a good investment for not only the home but also for the safety of you and your family. Lastly, though in days past most security systems were installed utilizing wire connections, these days wireless box systems are the norm and this means less of an expense for homeowners.

Keeping the Unwanted Out

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Every homeowner, upon moving into a new home, should change the locks. Though not an issue for new homes, those buying a home that has been lived in before would be wise to take heed this seemingly obvious, but important piece of advice. Though ninety-nine percent of the time this will never be an issue, there is no use risking a stranger waltzing into your living room at 3:00am.

If you decide to change the locks yourself, here are a few tips to help you:

First, remove the screws holding the doorknob plate in position. These will be found on the inside of the door, usually on a plate assembly mounted underneath the knob. Sometimes this is not the case and a pin will need to be depressed in the shaft of the knob.

Once this is done simply pull the knob apart while holding both sides.

Next, remove the striker. The striker is the small plate that the lock bolt or dead bolt passes through to lock into the door frame. This is also simply unscrewed.

Once this is done and all parts are removed, install the new lock and knobs in the same way they were removed. Be sure the striker is facing the right way or the door will not close properly or will get stuck. Most locks will be the same but always bring the old one, if possible, to the hardware store to make sure the new one will fit.

Free Lamborghini with home purchase

Free Lamborghini with home purchase

Yes, its true that todays real estate market has taken a huge down turn in certain states like Florida, Washington, Los Vegas and many more places around the world. Real estate deals seem to be popping up every place giving a home buyer a lot of choices.

Now a days, good prices alone just won’t sell a property. Sellers and Real estate developers are resorting to all kinds of bribes and discounts to entice buyers to purchase the homes they are selling. Its seems very normal to see sellers of properties include cars, Plasma TV’s, bedroom sets or fully furnished apartments.

One Real estate Developer of the South of Fifth development in South Beach Florida is offering a Free Lamborghini worth $260,000 when you purchase one of there multimillion dollar apartment homes. This development is made up of 28 super luxury apartments on the beach. So if you got a cool million dollars to spend this seems like the place to live. Just remember to get a moving truck because you wont be able to fit to many moving boxes into the Lamborghini.

In my opinion, giving away freebies like t.v.’s, furniture and yes even cars should help entice a home buyer enough to make a purchase. So if your looking to buy a new home, you should be asking the seller if items like the T.V. or furniture are include with the sale. Chances are the seller is willing to let go of those things to help close a deal.

Please let us know what’s your opinion on getting freebies with home purchases or what kind of freebies have you seen being offered.
