Moving with Friends

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Not everyone who wants to be involved helping will have open schedules on the moving day. Some might be able to come over ahead of time and help packing boxes. Having a consistent labeling system makes it easy for anyone to pack moving boxes, without wasting time asking questions. The kitchen is a great room to start, because most things in the kitchen won’t raise any, “What should I do with this?” questions. Painting at the new house before the moving day is also a great way for people to be involved. And painting before the move, even without help, will save you from having to paint around furniture!

Besides the obvious things that people can do to help, there are plenty of little things that could be done. Family members who are hanging out on moving day, but are unable to do any of the heavy duty jobs can be in charge of picking up pizza for all the movers and helpers. (Although the home owner should be sure to pick up the bill, its one small way of expressing appreciation for all the help.) You might also need someone to make a run to the store for cleaning supplies, lightbulbs or paper plates. It’s a good idea to have some cash on the moving day, so that others can be sent to the store, or pizza place. The home owner needs to be available to direct traffic, furniture, and checklists at the new estate.

Before everyone leaves, take a group picture of everyone standing in front of the new house, with some moving boxes on the lawn. When life goes back to normal, this picture can be turned into a nice thank you card. Because you really will be thankful.

Moving Help

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Moving to a new house is a time that people can really use all the help they can get. Friends and family are usually excited when they find out about the purchase of a new home. The new home’s owner might have plenty of people volunteering to help with packing boxes, but without a plan, all the helping hands may go to waste. Here are some simple ways to make sure that many hands really do make light work.

A checklist at both the old and the new house can clearly show what needs to be done. Each checklist should be split into rooms, or into similar tasks. For instance, a checklist could have all vacuuming jobs grouped together, assuming that whoever has the vacuum will move room to room. Otherwise the list could have each task under the heading of what room it is in. Dividing tasks by room is a good approach if there is a specific order that the jobs need to be done in. An example of this would be that dusty counters should be cleaned before the floor is swept to avoid having to sweep a second time. The more specific a list is, the better chance that what needs to be done will actually happen.

Moving in a Snap!

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

If getting an entire household worth of moving boxes sounds too vague, or like too many boxes, go online and order exactly the moving supplies needed. This will generally be slightly more expensive per box, but not very much. Ordering boxes separately enables a person to get exactly how many moving boxes they want or need in each specific size. Beyond just ordering a ton of boxes, there is always the option to get the household package, and then order a few other items for specific household needs. (For instance, more dish barrels for someone who collects antique plates.) Check to see what various companies offer in their household package, and go from there.

Beyond moving boxes, there are many other things that can be ordered online. Be sure to check out packing materials and moving supplies. Large and small bubble wrap, as well as packing paper may be included in some household packages. At other companies, these must be ordered separately. Either way make sure that there will be enough.

When ordering boxes, remember to get plastic or special fabric to cover furniture. Trying to skip this step will end up either scratching the furniture, or putting rips in the spare bed sheets or extra blankets that get used. It is not cheeper to avoid buying the furniture protecter. Buying it actually saves money!

Being able to look up, and figure out what is needed for the move is made simple by going online. Take advantage of the options that modern technology offers.

Moving in the Internet Age

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Getting ready to move has become much easier with all the things that the internet now makes available. Moving boxes can often be ordered online from companies that also rent moving trucks. Ordering packing boxes can be as simple as entering the size of the household that is being moved. The information needed can be as simple as, “Three bedroom house, two car garage.” With this info, the company sends a specific package of moving boxes. These boxes for moving range in size, as well as having different strengths for carrying differing types of items.

If a person chooses to go with the household package of boxes, the company will also send wardrobe boxes. This type of box is made specifically for moving clothes, and is just like a mini-closet. Clothing can be taken out of the closet and put directly into the box. It stays upright, and keeps the clothes from getting very wrinkled. It saves tons of time, because it eliminates the step of folding clothes from the closet to fit into normal boxes. It also prevents clothing from getting thrown into the moving truck, unprotected, and possibly getting ruined. Another great type of box that the household package may include is called a dish barrel. These can be very helpful for moving kitchen items. It is also a great idea to use dish barrels for any expensive or heirloom china sets. Dish barrels can also be used for things that aren’t dishes, but simply need extra protection because they are fragile.
