Downsizing may sound like a painful move, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re moving to a smaller house temporarily or just bought your small but dream home, here are some tips on making the moving process a lot less painful.
Decide, as early as possible, what you will discard. If your new place is obviously smaller than your current one, you will have no choice but to give up some things. This can mean large pieces of furniture, part of your wardrobe or complete rooms full of stuff. Don’t leave this decision until the last minute, when you are more likely to get sentimental and try to bring everything along.
Think about storage. Renting a storage room may be a great temporary solution, but keep in mind the long-term costs associated with it. If you can give things up, choose that first. Otherwise, just pack things into moving boxes and move them to a storage locker. Again, doing this earlier, rather than later, will allow you to save time and stress.
Replace your furniture. If you have a large couch or a massive bookcase, chances are they will end up making your new rooms seem smaller than they are. Try downsizing to a set of shorter bookcases and replace your sofa with a loved seat.
