Q. moving a washing machine cross country...any special packing instructions?

A. To begin with, in order to move your washing machine properly when moving cross country, you need to make the appropriate accommodations during the week in advance to your move.
Those accommodations are:
-
Make sure to complete any laundry that needs to be done before your move at least few days to a week before moving.
-
Or be smart and make your life a little easier (and a lot less stressful) and send your washes during the two weeks before your move to the Laundromat.
-
During the last few days before your move when you are not making any washes, check on your washing machine once or twice to be sure that it is drying out properly so that it will be devoid of any water swishing around when you are ready to have it moved. If it is still wet then make sure you drain all water out of the washer and take a towel and dry the interior.
-
Put aside sheets towels and clothes that you may be ready to turn in to the Salvation Army (or they are just old) that you can use to stuff the washing machine with before the movers arrive. The metal interior in which the clothes are placed when washes are made tends to shift when it is empty and being moved. If you stuff the interior of the washing machine with towels, clothes, sheets, etc. it will keep it from shifting around and hitting the other mechanisms in the washing machine that can cause damage to it during the move.
-
After packing the interior of the washing machine place a box of baking soda (the one that the box top stays on) in order to help reduce any chance of mildew build-up.
-
If there are any accessories on your washing machine, such as the knobs used to choose the kind of wash (knobs are usually on the older washing machines) then you want to take them off and place them in to a plastic bag and then put it in a safe place that you can easily find it after the move.
-
Lastly, tape the lid shut and cover the outside with a large moving pad or bubble wrap. Optional: If you have the original box it came in, you can use it to pack the washing machine in or go to an appliance store and ask for box. As a last resort use bubble wrap and/or moving pad.
IMPORTANT: During move washing machine should stand upright at all times.
