Tips on packing cardboard boxes using moving supplies

Packing Furniture Chest moving furniture Q. My daughter wants to move a furniture chest - size 50 X 14 X 20 from San Diego to Detroit.  She is transferring from one college to another and does not want to leave her grandmother's chest along the side of the road in California.  She will probably be sending her stuff via Greyhound Bus Lines since that seems to be the cheapest way.  We need to figure out how she can box this chest so that the bus line will accept it for shipment.  I have looked for cardboard boxes but can't seem to find a fit.  Any suggestions?

A. Finding a cardboard box that is an exact fit to the furniture chest will be impossible.  Also, some transport companies like Greyhound have packing requirements on how items should be packaged.
Two packing suggestions in my opinion are:
1) Create your own custom box out of multiple boxes.
2) Use a packing supply such as bubble wrap.

If you were going to go with packing suggestion 1, I would start by purchasing some extra large moving boxes.  The extra large cardboard boxes we sell on DirectMovingBoxes.com are 24 x 24 x 15 when folded into a box.  Now, I am going to share a packing trick with you for making a custom shaped box.  Keep the boxes flat.   By keeping the extra large boxes flat (do not fold) they will measure 48 inches long x 39 inches high.

Packing using flat cardboard boxes:

  • Place the above-mentioned flat cardboard boxes on the top, bottom and sides of your furniture chest.
  • Using a box cutter or scissor, trim the cardboard boxes to better fit the measurements of your furniture chest.
  • Use plenty of professional packing tape to hold moving boxes together.
Packing Tip:
Packing each chest draw into separate cardboard boxes will help lighten the furniture when carrying.

Packing suggestion 2:
Start by covering the furniture chest 2-3 times with bubble wrap.  Use packing tape to hold bubble wrap in place.  Packing your furniture chest with bubble wrap is a great way to protect the edges and corners.
