Proper way to Lifting Moving Boxes

After you are done packing your boxes, you will have to carry them to your car/truck. Don't be fooled by the size of a box, usually medium cardboard boxes can weigh a lot more then larger ones.
Quick Tip: always pack heaver items in smaller or medium boxes and lighter ones in the large moving boxes.

"Do Not" Tips for Moving Boxes
Do Not try and carry multiple boxes at once. Cardboard boxes are flat and will slip off each other when stacked high.
Do Not keep your legs straight and bend over when lifting cardboard boxes. This can lead to back injury.
Do Not place cardboard boxes or other large items up on your shoulder. Doing so may cause you to loose your balance, resulting in you getting injured as well as dropping the box and damaging the content within.

"Do" Tips for Moving Boxes
• Carry moving boxes that you feel comfortable lifting.
• If you feel that you have to put a box or item down because it is to heavy, then put it down for a few moments and then continue.
• When lifting cardboard boxes (medium and large), always squat down and make sure you have a good and comfortable grip on the boxes before lifting.
• Use a partner to help lift large moving boxes even if they are light.

Helpful Tools when Moving Boxes
• Wear a weight belt to take pressure of your back when lifting your moving boxes. Gym weight belts work great or you can purchase a specialty work belt used specifically for lifting items.
You can find work belts at your local hardware store for about $14 - $20.
• Use packing gloves that have grip material on them to prevent items and cardboard boxes from slipping out of your hand.
• Use a dollie (flat board with wheels) or hand truck as they let you carry more cardboard boxes and not put any strain on yourself.
• If you are renting a moving truck, getting one with an automatic lift gate on the back will save you the hassle of having to lift the cardboard boxes up into the truck and down out of the vehicle.

Last point: Take your time when packing/unpacking your moving truck.  Don’t be afraid to ask somebody for assistance. For example If you can’t see over the top of a large box when carrying it, then ask somebody to help you even if the moving boxes are light.  When packing your moving truck remember: safe, slow and sufficient gets the job done! back to top
